Sts. Francis and Clare mission will offer Mass at 9 AM on Christmas Day, Friday, December 25th!
The address is 402 NE 29th ST, Miami, FL, 33137. That's north of downtown, just east of Biscayne Boulevard. Here's a map: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=402+N.E.+29th+Street%2C+Miami%2C+FL+33137

2. St. Malachy will be celebrating a Missa Cantata at 7:30 AM on Sunday, December 27th! Congratulations to all members of the Community who have worked hard to make this possible! As a reminder, St. Malachy regularly offers Low Mass in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite on the first Sunday of each month. The address is 6200 N University Drive, Tamarac, Florida 33321. Mass at Sts. Francis and Clare will be celebrated at 10:30 AM instead of 9:00 AM on Sunday, December 27th! THIS IS A ONE-TIME CHANGE. Mass will continue to be celebrated at 9:00 AM from Sunday, January 3, 2010, onward. This one-time change is to allow some of our Community's altar servers and other members to help with the Mass at St. Malachy's on Sunday, December 27th. We thank them for their generosity, and the Community at large for its understanding.

4. Unfortunately, the daily Low Mass previously offered at South Miami Hospital is no longer being celebrated. We will announce any daily Mass offerings in the future.

(Photo: Advent wreath at Sts. Francis and Clare Mission

The heart of the Archdiocese of Miami's offerings of Mass in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite, the Sunday morning Missa Cantata celebrated for years at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church, has now moved to a new home: Sts. Francis and Clare Mission Church or San Francisco y Santa Clara! The Community is going strong, and things are looking up at our new location, which will host the Mass according to the Missale Romanum of 1962 at 9:00 AM from now on.

Sts. Francis and Clare is a mission church of Corpus Christi parish. It is located just east of Biscayne Boulevard at 402 N.E. 29th Street Miami, FL 33137. Here is a map: http://bit.ly/2KIAA7

Our numbers increased after the closing weeks at St. Robert's. More Archdiocese of Miami Catholics are taking part in this beautiful form of the Church's liturgy. Over time, some physical improvements may be made to our new physical home, but as Fr. Joseph Fishwick, our celebrant, pointed out, we are called to rebuild God's Church through Christian charity and faith as St. Francis was before us. Why don't you come visit us?

Here's a quick snapshot of the church I took 20 minutes before Mass.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://miamilatinmass.blogspot.com/2009/10/traditional-latin-mass-in-miami-at-sts.html' title='Sunday Mass in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite or the Traditional Latin Mass in Miami now at Sts. It is easily reached from SR 112 (the “Airport Expressway”) by exiting the expressway at Biscayne Boulevard and proceeding south a few blocks and turning left (east) onto NE 29th Street. If one is coming from the south on Biscayne Boulevard, then obviously one will turn right onto NE 29th Street. The Mission will be on your right. Physically, it is about the size of St Robert Bellarmine and is very attractive architecturally, in a Spanish style, and quite conducive to the celebration of Mass in the Extraordinary Form.

There will be no time constraints from other morning masses. We hope in the near future to be able to move into a more permanent home, but we must remember that we are a “pilgrim people,” particularly in these uncertain times. We ask everyone to support the old Mass, this Mass which is the perfect setting for Gregorian chant, contemplative prayer, and a sacrificial spirit, and which is the priceless heritage of our Catholic faith. “Procedamus in pace…”

Father Joseph Fishwick

Traditional Latin Mass in Miami at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church- September Schedule

<h3 class="UIIntentionalStory_Message" data-ft="{"type":"msg"}" style="color: #333333; Yes we have Radio Paz... which I listen to daily, but English language Catholic Radio is something that we MUST support. Dennis has had a number of nationally known Catholic intellectuals including Father Fessio, Dr. Peter Kreeft, Dr. Robert George, Dr. William Lucky, Colleen Carrol Campbell, Father Sirico, Father Frank Pavone, Father Neuhaus before he passed away, Father Kearns, Mike Novak, and Thomas E Woods. Not to mention Dennis has recently begun promoting events at local parishes which is incredibly needed in this economic downturn. He is starting with St Michael the Archangel which is know for being supportive of the Gregorian Chant and Polyphony and I know Father Marino to be supportive of the Benedictine Reform. Please consider attending St. Michael's and tell Father Marino, Dennis sent you!

Listen Live Mondays through Fridays On 1040 AM Radio from 8:00am to 9:00am. You can also listen on the internet by going to http://www.rpconradio.com/ As Dennis would say, "It's a live, call-in show made a lot more lively by your calls to 1-866-716-1040" Here is the advance of the promotion Dennis will be airing on his show:

Here's the promotion we are going to do on the radio show for Father Marino of St. Michael the Archangel in Miami. Please read and consider attending this Sunday's Mass and those in the future:

As Catholic as the Pope located in the heart of the City of Miami, just minutes from I-95, Downtown, The Dolphin and Miami International Airport, St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church and School is a place where Tradition and Faithfulness to the Majesterium takes pride of place. At St. Michael's we understand that the Mass is not about us but about us worshipping God in the manner that He has asked. At St. Michael's in addition to the Spanish masses we offer the Sunday 10:30 Mass in English, featuring worship according to the mind and example of Pope Benedict XVI: the Benedictine Altar arrangement, orthodox preaching, solemnity, reverence and Gregorian Chant and Mass propers. When thebeautiful and radiant face of Christ our Savior becomes the center of sacred worship, all creation longs to cry out with the psalmist: “every work that He does is full ofsplendor and beauty.”12

If the beauty of Holy Mass does not, in essence, rely upon the splendid beauty oficonography, ornate vestments, Gregorian chant or Baroque architecture, why thenhas the Church invested so much of its patrimony in fostering these sacred arts? Godhas placed a legitimate desire in the human soul to create beautiful things because hewants man to share in his masterpiece of creation, a creation that is good andbeautiful.

Beauty in the Liturgy results from order. This is why the Liturgy, by its very nature, demands order, and so Liturgy cannot exist without rubrics or ceremony. Beautyshines through the gestures of the Sacred Liturgy. Thus, the external acts of worship, such as making the Sign of the Cross, genuflecting, kneeling and bowing, becomeways to internalize reverence and beauty in our human lives.

“Every liturgical gesture, being a gesture of Christ, is called to express beauty.”13 Andso the transcendent beauty of the Liturgy permeates the hearts of men, and forms usto have proper relationships, not only with God, but also with our neighbor, andtherefore empowers us to transform human culture. This is the genuine meaning of“inculturation.” If we Catholics want the inherent beauty of the liturgy to convert the“culture of death,” we must permit the Sacred Liturgy to form us by its spirit, which isthe Spirit of Christ.

This means that, in humility, we must, renounce any desire to make the Liturgyconform to changing whims. Consequently, let us renounce unauthorizedinnovations, rubrical improvisation, banality, and misguided-creativity.

Hence, "…the Old Rite becomes a living treasure of the Church and also shouldprovide a standard of worship, of mystery, and of catechesis toward which thecelebrations of the Novus Ordo must move. In other words, the Tridentine Mass is themissing link. And unless it be re-discovered in all its faithful truth and beauty, the Novus Ordo will not respond to the organic growth and change that has characterizedthe liturgy from its beginning."

12 Ps. 111:3.
13 Liturgy and Beauty, by Most Rev. The site is sponsored by the Canons of St. John Cantius which is in union with Rome and who are located in Chicago. It was recommended by Reverend Monsignor Terence Hogan, Director of the Office of Worship and Spiritual Life in his blog regarding the promotion of the Extraordinary Form in the Archdiocese of Miami.

This is excerpt from Restoring Beauty in the Liturgy

Jesus Christ has chosen the Church for his Bride. In nuptial love, the Bride of Christ looks into the eyes of the Bridegroom and calls out: “Splendor and majesty are in his presence; power and beauty are in his sanctuary.”1 The Wedding Feast of the Lamb described in the Book of Revelation actually describes the Sacred Liturgy of the Church.2 In the climax of her heavenly worship, the Bride reflects the image of the Bridegroom – the image of the Word-Made-Flesh, who is Beauty-Incarnate.

For the world, the maxim, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder,”3 is a subjective statement. For the Bride of Christ, this is a concrete reality of the Incarnation! Sadly in our own times, the banal and vulgar have invaded our sanctuaries, following “a misguided sense of creativity.”4 Nothing, therefore, is more important today than the restoration of the beauty of the Sacred Liturgy, the restoration of the sacred. Hans Urs von Balthasar, the 20th century's most notable writer on the theology of beauty, said: "We can be sure that whoever sneers at Beauty's name…can no longer pray and soon will no longer be able to love."5

In order celebrate the Sacred Liturgy with due reverence and beauty, the Church must be able to “distinguish between the sacred and the profane.”6 When false types of “inculturation” pollute liturgical worship we must be mindful that “all is not valid; all is not licit; all is not good.”7 The secular, the cheap, the inferior and the inartistic “are not meant to cross the threshold of God’s temple.”8 In order to “restore the sacred” we must, first and foremost, contemplate the beauty of Christ in the Sacred Liturgy – “a sacred action surpassing all others.”9

This begins with external fidelity to the rubrics, but leads to internal union with Christ, for “those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”10 The spiritual beauty of the Sacred Liturgy transforms the lives of Catholics. Indeed, “the encounter with the beautiful can become the wound of the arrow that strikes the heart and in this way opens our eyes.”11 This spiritual beauty forms the Christ-like heart in moral beauty. And when the spiritual beauty of the Sacred Liturgy has transformed a soul, man can then create things of beauty, such as art, architecture, poetry, and music.

1 Ps 96:6. 2 Rev. 1:10-13; 4:4-8; 5:14; 11:16; 14:3; 19:4. 3 Anon. Pope Benedict XVI seeks in this Apostolic Letter to reconcile “in the heart of the Church” those individuals who have demonstrated an attachment to the liturgical forms that were in place before the liturgical renewal of the Second Vatican Council. He begins by defining two forms of the rule of prayer of the Latin Church: an ordinary form contained in the Roman Missal of Pope Paul VI, and an extraordinary form, as contained in the Roman Missal of Pope Saint Pius V. Both make up the Liturgy of the Roman Rite.
Any priest of the Latin Church may, without permission from the Holy See or his bishop, celebrate the extraordinary form in a Mass without the people at any time except during the Easter Triduum. It is noted that he may be joined by the faithful, since the extraordinary rite is primarily a private Mass. In parishes where a group of faithful are attached to the extraordinary form of the Mass, they may approach the pastor to request the celebration of the extraordinary rite, without permissions from the Holy See or the bishop. If a priest cannot demonstrate a minimum rubrical or linguistic ability in Latin, he is not to celebrate the extraordinary form of the Mass.
Pope Benedict XVI is very clear in his apostolic letter that the current Roman Missal (Missale Romanum) is the ordinary form of the Eucharistic Liturgy and the extraordinary form is found in the 1962 Missal of Blessed John XXIII. He points out that there is “no contradiction between the missals” and that the history of liturgical books is characterized by “growth and progress, but not rupture.” In both the ordinary and extraordinary forms of the Roman Missal, full, conscious, and active participation of the faithful is to be desired above all else. This begins with interior participation in the sacrifice of Christ. The ordinary form customarily accomplishes this participation through listening and responding to the prayers of the Mass in the vernacular and by taking part in forms of exterior communal action. The extraordinary form accomplishes this interior participation largely by listening to the prayers in Latin and following the words and actions of the priests and joining our hearts to “what is said by him in the Name of Christ and [what] Christ says [to] him.”
From all of the above we see that the Church continues to treasure the riches of its past, especially with regard to the sacred liturgy. The spirit of earlier liturgical forms, which permeated the spirit and culture of many who still remember these forms, continues in the celebration of both rites. Thus, it was through pastoral concern that Pope Benedict XVI was motivated to more easily allow for the celebration of more ancient liturgical rites and prayers by issuing Summorum Pontificium. I ask her to awaken in the heart of every priest a generous and renewed commitment to the ideal of complete self-oblation to Christ and the Church which inspired the thoughts and actions of the saintly Curé of Ars. It was his fervent prayer life and his impassioned love of Christ Crucified that enabled John Mary Vianney to grow daily in his total self-oblation to God and the Church. May his example lead all priests to offer that witness of unity with their Bishop, with one another and with the lay faithful, which today, as ever, is so necessary...

Read the Supreme Pontiff's complete Apostolic Letter Here.

The Archdiocese of Miami opened the Year for Priests with Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in all parishes, and special vigils or other celebrations at some.

Bishop Felipe J. Estevez, auxiliary for our archdiocese, writes to us about "Faithfulness, the priesthood and an opportunity for renewal" on Let's Talk, the archdiocesan blog:

This initiative for the whole Church is an opportunity for renewal, not only for priests, but for all members of the community of faith; to truly affirm priests is not a form of clericalism but a demonstration of love for the Eucharist and the Church. Thank goodness, Vatican II has helped us to recognize the dignity of the laity and to bring back the permanent diaconate. Now is the time to invigorate the ministry of priests.

The theme for the year will be “The faithfulness of Christ, the faithfulness of the Priest.” Like a married man, a priest makes solemn promises to God and to the community. Both priests and married men face temptations and discouragement, but they are called to overcome them. In the case of priests, they are called to remain in a type of love that conquers all because its ultimate strength is rooted in the love of Christ...

It is known that in those parishes where the Eucharist is truly revered, where visits to the Blessed Sacrament are encouraged, where the practice of adoration happens, priestly vocations grow. This is logical. Where the Eucharistic love is intensified, this love touches the hearts of youths to the point of leading them to love Christ to the highest degree of self-giving disposition...

What will you do to affirm priests? How will you contribute to their fidelity? How will you grow in understanding their identity as the Church understands it? The year of priests could not come at a better time for us!

To read Bishop Estevez's full posting, click here.

Traditional Latin Mass at St. Malachy Church in Tamarac, Broward County, Florida

South Florida Catholics who love the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite should take note that St. Malachy Catholic Church in Tamarac is offering this form of Mass on the first Sunday of every month at 8:00 a.m. during the summer through the last Sunday of August. Many of the parishioners have been requesting a Mass in the extraordinary form for some years now, and their wish (and prayer) has come to fruition! The reaction has been very positive from the parishioners as well as from people from other parishes attending...

The tentative long term wish is to have this Mass each week. Fr. O’Dwyer will eventually offer the Mass, and is currently learning and practicing the rubrics to perfect his skills. It is also hoped that a Missa cantata can be offered at some point... The parishioners of St. Malachy Church are grateful to Fr. O’Dwyer for bringing this beautiful Mass to the parish, and of course grateful to the Holy Father as well!!

Read the whole thing at Musica Sacra Florida here.

Some St. Malachy parishioners also attend the Latin Mass celebrated at St. Robert Bellarmine Church in Miami by Fr. They hope that Mass according to the 1962 Missale Romanum will soon be celebrated twice a month at St. Malachy.

We will bring you news when and if this happens!

Latin Mass for Non-Latin Speakers

I'd like to offer some reassurance to those afraid they will not be able to follow the EF Mass because they do not know Latin.

First and foremost, remember that Our Lord is really present in the Eucharist regardless of which valid form of Mass is being celebrated, and that we can adore Him and receive Him reverently while in a state of grace even if we don't understand every word spoken.

Think of a child attending Mass who may not understand the meaning of every word in the Liturgy, every turn of phrase in Sacred Scripture, or every point made by the priest as he preaches the homily.

Being new to the Old Mass, I've personally approached it with this childlike attitude and have been growing in my understanding of the Mass by participating attentively and learning along the way.

Here are some basics about Latin and the vernacular at the Traditional Mass at St. Robert Bellarmine's:

Latin-English or Latin-Spanish Missal booklets containing the Order of Mass are available in the vestibule, along with English and Spanish handouts containing the propers for that Sunday. Next to the Missal booklets are hymnbooks containing music the congregation can join in singing both in English and in Latin, and veils for ladies who wish to cover their hair.

Some members of the congregation usually pray the rosary in Latin before Mass begins, and it is very easy for one who does not know the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be in Latin to pray along in the language of his choice.

The epistle and gospel are read in the vernacular, the celebrant preaches the homily in the vernacular, and makes announcements in the vernacular.

In short, if you can read and understand English, you will be able to follow the words of the Mass with no trouble. But, of course, there's much more to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass than that!

Traditional Mass at St. Robert Bellarmine's in Miami on Sundays

So you've been wanting to attend Mass in the Extraordinary Form of the Latin Rite in the Miami area for a while now. Maybe you've looked up the schedule and found that St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church offers the Old Mass every Sunday, but that parish is a little out of the way for you, or perhaps 8:00 a.m. seems too early an hour to be at church. Do you wonder what to expect, or whether you will be able to follow along easily?

If so, you and I were in the exact same position before Ash Wednesday this year, when I decided to attend the Traditional Latin Mass at St. Robert's all throughout Lent. Well, since then I've enjoyed the blessing of this Mass on a regular basis, and only regret not doing so sooner!

I encourage both first-timers and those who are familiar with the Old Mass to attend. You will find the liturgy reverent, the homily enlightening and edifying, the music uplifting, and the congregation welcoming.

It would be wonderful to see more Masses in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman or Latin Rite throughout the Archdiocese and I encourage you to use this blog as a platform to help this happen. In the meantime, consider this an invitation:

Traditional Latin Mass in Miami

Sundays

8:00 a.m.

St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church

3405 NW 27th Ave
Miami, FL 33142

Celebrant: Father Joseph Fishwick

The Extraordinary Form of the Latin Rite in South Florida

So far the only parish that celebrates the Extraordinary Form of the Latin Rite in South Florida is St. Robert Bellarmine located at 3405 NW 27th Avenue, Miami, Florida 33142 (305)633-6009. I will post one or two here. If anyone has information regarding parishes in Miami offering the EF or seminars on Gregorian Chant or Polyphony, etc. Please post it here. Also if you are interested in forming a Latin Mass Society please post here. Above all, remember that an additional Mass in the weekly schedule can create quite a bit of work for the parish priests who may not have the manpower or resources to jump at a request for the EF. Be charitable even when being forcefully resisted!

Luis,
I found your Latin Mass in Miami blog while searching for Mass in the
Extraordinary Form in the Miami area. Do you have any information
regarding venues (or possible venues) where the TLM might be celebrated
in the Miami area (other than the indult Mass at St. Robert
Bellarmine)?
Thank you and God bless,
Jose--
--------------------------------------------------
Jose
I have called around to other churches in Miami. No one is offering the TLM as far as I know. Father Kubala at St. Thomas the Apostle was supposed be trainging with Father Fryar FSSP in order to offer the TLM. However, my contacts there tell me it has been months with several scheduled TLM being cancelled. (Perhaps demand is not sufficient) Father Christopher Marino, who is now at St. Michael the Archangel, had offered the Low Mass at his previous parish, Visitation. His Latin is quite good and he has recently had a seminar on Gregorian chant and Polyphony at St Michael's. I will be posting your e mail (without your address) and my response on the website. I haven't really posted in some time since things seemed to be quite slow in Miami. I will try to make an effort to post more in the future (hopefully there will be more news to post).
vestri frater in Iesus
Luis---

Factoring your Faith into Your Life

Father Z has this for yesterdays Feast in the 1962 Calendar. They are listed in the Martyrologium Romanum . Here is their entry:

2. Commemoratio passionis sanctorum septem fratrum martyrum, qui Antiochiae in Syria, sub Antiocho Epiphane rege, propter legem Domini invicta fide servatam, morti crudeliter traditi sunt cum matre sua, in singulis quidem filiis passa, sed in omnibus coronata, sicut in secundo libro Maccabaeorum narratur. Item commemoratur sanctus Eleazarus, unus de primoribus scribarum, vir aetate provectus, qui in eadem persecutione, illicitam carnem manducare propter vitae amorem respuens, gloriosissimam mortem magis quam odiosam vitam complectens, voluntarie praeivit ad supplicium, magnum virtutis relinquens exemplum.

Maybe some of you good readers can produce your flawless English versions for those whose Latin is less smooth.

Who were the Maccabee brothers?

The Maccabees were Jews who rebelled against the Hellenic Seleucid dynasty in the time of Antiochus V Eupator. The Maccabees founded the Hasmonean dynasty and fought for Jewish independence in Israel from 165-63 BC. In 167 BC, Mattathias revolted against the Greek occupiers by refusing to worship the Greek gods. He killed a Hellenizing Jew who was willing to offer a sacrifice to the Greek gods. Mattathias and his five sons fled to the wilderness of Judea. Later Mattathias’s son Judas Maccabaeus led an army against the Seleucids and won. He entered Jerusalem, cleansed the Temple, and reestablished Jewish worship. Hanukkah commemorates this victory. In the period 167-164 BC Antiochus IV Epiphanes (175-163) killed and sold thousands of Jews into slavery. He violated the Jewish holy sites and set up an altar to Zeus in the Holy of Holies (1 Maccabees 1:54; Daniel 11:31). The people revolted and Antiochus responded with slaughter. He required under penalty of death that Jews sacrifice to the gods and abandon kosher laws. "Others were tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection. Still others had trial of mockings and scourgings, yes, and of chains and imprisonment" (Hebrews 11:35-36). A chief of the scribes, Eleazar, an old man, did not flee. Pork was forced on him, into his mouth, he spat it out and was then condemned to death.

St. Ambrose, in his work On Jacob and the blessed life recounts Eleazar’s death along with the deaths of seven sons of a mother. The work is filled with Neo-platonic and Stoic themes, especially about virtue theory. Ambrose goes through all their deaths in detail, making commentary on them for what they meant.

The mother is venerated by the Greeks as St. Solomnis.

In these scenes recounted by Ambrose from IV Maccabees, the mother is being tried by being forced to watch each of here sons executed in different ways, eldest to youngest. She urges them not to give in. Ambrose thus explores the theme of how God choses the weak and makes them strong. The ancient "priest" Eleazar should be weak and infirm due to age, but he is a tower of strength. The mother of the seven boys should be weak by nature but is unshakable. The sons are not to be moved to infidelity, even the youngest.

Here is a taste of Ambrose in De Iacob et vita beata II, 12:

The words of the holy woman return to our minds, who said to her sons: "I gave birth to you, and poured out my milk for you: do not lose your nobility." Other mothers are accustomed to pull their children away from martyrdom, not to exort them to martyrdom. But she thought that maternal love consisted in this, in persuading her sons to gain for themselves an eternal life rather than an earthly life. And thus the pius mother watched the torment of her sons … But her sons were not inferior to such a mother: they urged each other on, speaking with one single desire and, I would say, like an unfurling of their souls in a battleline.

The texts from Ambrose are really interesting.

                  COMMENTS (6)

• • • • • •

Father Zuhlsdorf reports some interesting news.

CDW’s Archbp. John Zuhlsdorf @ 5:38 pm

Today in La Repubblica there was an interview by Marco Politi with His Excellency Archbp. Malcolm Ranjith, Secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments.

There is a lot here that will be familiar to readers of WDTPRS!

"Why Ratzinger is recouping the sacred"

Marco Politi

The signal was unmistakable. First Coprus Christi in Rome, then seen live all over the word from Sydney. Benedict XVI is demanding that, before him, Communion be received on one’s knees. It is one of many reclamations of this pontificate: Latin, the "Tridentine" Mass, celebration with the back to the faithful.

Pope Ratzinger has a plan and the and the Sri Lankan [Archbishop] Malcolm Ranjith, whom the Pontiff wanted with him in the Vatican as Secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship, lays out with efficacy.

Attention to liturgy, he explains, has the objective of an "openness to the transcendent". At the request of the Pope, Ranjith states in advance, the Congregation for divine Worship is preparing a Compendium on the Eucharist to help priests to "prepare themselves well for Eucharistic celebration and adoration".

Does Communion kneeling aim in this direction?

"In the liturgy one feels the necessity to recover the sense of the sacred, above all in Eucharistic celebration. Since we believe that what happens at the altar goes far beyond what we can humanly imagine. And so the faith of the Church in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharistic species is expressed through adequate gestures and comportments different from those of daily life".

Indicating a discontinuity?

"We are not in front of a political figure or a personage of modern society, but before God. When the presence of eternal God descends on the altar, we must place ourselves in a posture more apt for adoring It. In my culture, in Sri Lanka, we ought to prostrate ourselves with head to the pavement as the buddhists and muslims do in prayer.

Does putting the Host in the hand diminish the sense of transcendence of the Eucharist?

"Yes, in a certain sense. It risks that the communicant feel It to be as normal bread. The Holy Father speaks often of the necessity of safeguarding the sense of "otherness" in the liturgy in its every expression. The gesture of taking the Sacred Host and putting it ourselves in the mouth and not receiving It reduces the profound meaning of Communion."

Is there a desire to oppose trends that banalize the Mass?

"In some places that sense of the eternal, sacred or heavenly has been lost. There was a tendency to put man at the center of the celebration, and not the Lord. But the Second Vatican Council speaks clearly about the liturgy as actio Dei, actio Christi. Instead, in certain liturgical circles, either for an ideology or a certain intellectualism as you please, the idea spread of a liturgy adaptable to various situations, in which one had to leave room for creativity, so that it be accessible and acceptable to all. Then, rather, there were those who introduced innovations without even respecting the sensus fidei and the spiritual sentiments of the faithful."

At times even bishops grap the microphone and go out to their listeners with questions and answers.

"The modern danger is that the priest things that he is at the center of the action. In that way the rite can take on an aspect of theatre or the performance of a television host. The celebrant sees the people who see him as the point of reference and there is a risk that, to have the greatest success possible with the public, he makes up gestures and expressions as if he were the main character."

What would be the right attitude?

"When the priest knows that it is not he at the center, bu Christ. In humble service to the Lord and the Church respecting the liturgy and its rules, as something to be received and not to be invented, it means leaving greater room for the Lord, because through the priest as the instrument He can spark the awareness of the faithful."

Are sermons by lay people also deviations?

"Yes. Because the sermon, as the Holy Father says, is the way in which Revelation and the great Tradition of the Church is explained, so that the Word of God can inspire the life of the faithful in their daily choices and render the liturgical celebration rich with spiritual fruits. The liturgical tradition of the Church reserves the sermon to the celebrant. To bishops, to priests, and to deacons. But not to laypeople.

Absolutely not?

"Not because they are not capable of doing making a reflection, but because in the liturgy roles must be respected. There exists, as the Council said, a difference ‘in essence and not only in grade" between the common priesthood of all the baptized and that of priests".

Some time ago Card. Ratzinger was complaining about the loss in the rites of the sense of mystery.

"Often the conciliar reform was interpreted or considered in a way not entirely in conformity with the mind of Vatican II. The Holy Father defines this tendency as the ‘anti-spirit’ of the Council.

A year now since the full reintroduction of the Tridentine Mass, what is the assessment?

"The Tridentine Mass has its very profound internal values which reflect the whole tradition of the Church. There is more respect toward the sacred through gestures, genuflections, the times of silence. There is greater room reserved for reflection on the action of the Lord and also for the celebrant’s personal sense of devotion, who offers the sacrifice not only for the faithful but also for his own sins and his own salvation. Some important elements of the old rite can help also a reflection on the manner of celebrating the Novus Ordo. We are in the midst of a journey.

Some day in the future is there foreseen a rite that takes the best of the old and of the new?

"That could be, ... but perhaps I don’t see that. I think that in the coming decades we will move toward a comprehensive evaluation both of the older rite and of the new, safeguarding whatever is eternal and supernatural happening at the altar and reducing every desire to be the in the limelight so as to leave space for effective contact between the faithful and the Lord through the figure, but not predominantly, of the priest."

With alternative positions of the celebrant? When the priest would be turned around toward the apse?

"You could consider the offertory, when the offerings are brought to the priest, and from there all the way to the Eucharistic prayer, which represents the culminating moment of "transsubstantiatio" and "communio".

The priest who turns his back disorients the faithful.

"It is a mistake to speak in that way. On the contrary, he is turned to the Lord together with the people. The Holy Father, in his book The Spirit of the Council, explained that when people are sitting around looking at each other, a closed circle is formed. But when the priest and the faithful together a looking to the East, toward the Lord who comes, that is a way of opening up to the eternal".

In this view you put also the rehabilitation (recupero) of Latin?

"I don’t like the word ‘rehabilitation’. We are implementing the Second Vatican Council, which explicitly affirmed that the use of the Latin language, except in the case of particular law, was to be preserved in the Latin Rites. So, if room was also left for the introduction of vernacular languages, Latin wasn’t to be completely abandoned. The use of a sacred language is a tradition in the whole world. In Hinduism the language of prayer is Sanskrit, which isn’t in use anymore. In Buddhism Pali is used, a language which only Buddist monks study. In Islam the Arabic of the Koran is used. The use of a sacred language helps us to a lived experience of "otherness".

Latin as the sacred language of the Church?

"Of course. The Holy Father himself speaks in his Apostolic Exhortation Sacramentum caritatis in paragraph 62: "In order to express more clearly the unity and universality of the Church, I wish to endorse the proposal made by the Synod of Bishops, in harmony with the directives of the Second Vatican Council, that, with the exception of the readings, the homily and the prayer of the faithful, it is fitting that such liturgies be celebrated in Latin." Of course, in during international gatherings."

What does Benedict XVI want to accomplish, giving new force back to the liturgy?

"The Pope wants to offer the possibility of arriving at the wonder of life in Christ, a life that in the very living here on earth already leads us to sense the freedom and the eternity belonging to the children of God. And this kind of experience is lived powerfully through an authentic renewal of the faith which presupposes a foretaste of the heavenly reality in the liturgy one believes in, one celebrates and one lives. The Church is, and must become, the powerful instrument and the means for this liberating liturgical experience. And it is her liturgy that makes it possible to spark such an experience in her faithful".
